Sethからの手紙 - よそ行き顔で

AppArmorの開発者で、OLS2007で親しく話をしたSeth Arnoldとその後何度かメールを交換している。Sethは、OLSのときにはNovellで働いていたが、例のレイオフで現在は無職で時間のある生活を満喫しているらしい。内容的に差し障りのないところをここに貼っておくことにする。

レイオフを行った際にSethからは、AppArmorの残ったエンジニアは一人と聞いていたが、300人近くのエンジニアを解雇したことは、確かに通常あまりないことだ。

今でも不思議なのだが、SethとはOLSが初対面だったが、最初から親近感を感じていた。世の中的には、AppArmorはTOMOYO Linuxのライバルと言われているが、実は中身はかなり違う。Sethが書いているように、システム全体をロックダウンするなら、SELinuxかTOMOYO LinuxでAppArmorはシステム全体のロックダウンには適していない（少なくともそれを目指して設計されたものではない）。このことは、OLSのClosing ReceptionでもSethは同じことを言っていた。

いくら時間ができてうれしいといっても、いきなり解雇されたら残念だろうし、生活もある。Sethを元気づけたいと思って、Sethの写真もある記事を紹介したが、楽しんでもらえたようで、自分もとてもうれしい。happyだ。

OLSが終わってすぐにメールしたときは、数ヶ月返事がこなかった。後から届いたメールで、「OLSに行っていた間の残務に忙殺されて」という説明が届いた。それを読んで、国は違ってもIT関連は同じだなと思ったことを覚えている。

TOMOYO LinuxのLiveCDは、試みとして非常に新しく興味深いものを持っている。だが、その価値はなかなか思ったように伝わらないことを感じている。Sethは確かにそれを理解してくれている。それは言葉にできずうれしいことだ。
